Shio-no-michi Salt Road Trek
Follow the historic “salt road” through rural hamlets, terraced fields and quiet forest paths.

The old road where salt once travelled
For centuries, the Shio-no-michi — the “salt road” — carried salt from the Sea of Japan into the landlocked mountains. Today it is a peaceful walking route through a Japan few travellers ever see: working farms, roadside shrines, terraced rice fields and deep forest.
Your guide reveals the human history of the route and the rhythms of rural mountain life, at a relaxed pace with time to meet the landscape slowly.
